Preparation method
1. Germination phase
๐ฟ With a small scraper, lightly sand the surface of the seeds to make them porous.
๐ฟ Soak them for 3 to 4 days to soften the skin.
๐ฟ Cut them lengthwise with a knife (be sure to protect the hand holding the seeds to avoid the risk of cuts).
๐ฟ Dip the seeds in a bowl of warm water.
๐ฟ -Approximately 5 days after cutting the seeds, seedlings (the first stems) appear and are visibly growing. The root system develops after fourteen days (change the water occasionally so that it does not stagnate, but be careful not to damage the very fragile shoots).
2. Continuation of culture in the external environment
๐ฟ Lotus needs space, so get it a new container (sink, bathtub or plastic or metal bowl...), whose cylindrical shape will have a beneficial effect on the plant's growth. Size: 50 to 60 cm deep for a diameter of 60 to 80 cm, or 150 to 250 liters.
๐ฟ Place it in a well-exposed location, as lotuses especially love warmth, humidity, and full sun, factors that condition their flowering.
๐ฟ Fill the bottom of the pond with a layer of rich soil (30 to 40 cm), then with water soil (10 cm).
๐ฟ When the small lotus has at least 5 leaves, carefully place it and cover it with a thin layer of potting soil, then with fine gravel (be careful not to break or cover the growing points) to keep it in place.
๐ฟ Gently submerge the plant in the final spot (start with 5 cm of water, then 15 to 50 cm). Lotus naturally grows in marshy areas and prefers standing water.
๐ฟ A contribution of fertilizer in the spring will support the growth of the plant and its flowering: you can get this 8 to 12 months after the start of germination.
Wintering
Lotuses are robust plants that can withstand temperatures below 0 ยฐC. However, make sure that the water level is constant (at least 30 cm). If a thin layer of ice on the surface is not dangerous, the water should not freeze in contact with the plant (increase the water level or cover the pond).
