Preparation method
How to grow a cactus:
1. Preparation: Soak the compacted soil lozenges in a container with plenty of warm water for 5 minutes. As the soil loosens, remove the cotton cloth surrounding the soil and add the loose soil to the biodegradable containers provided.
2. Watering: Make sure the soil is wet before sowing seeds.
3. Sowing: Cactus seeds are extremely small and some of them are difficult to see. Carefully open the seed packet and sprinkle the seeds on the surface of the soil. DO NOT cover or cover the seeds with soil or they will not germinate!
4. Humidity: Covering the pots with plastic wrap can help prevent the pots from drying out and maintain high humidity, but it is an optional step. If you choose to cover the pots with plastic wrap, you will need to poke 10-15 holes with a toothpick and open the wrap once a day to allow fresh air into the pots. This will prevent mold growth. DO NOT place the pots in direct sunlight, as this will destroy the seeds. Indirect sunlight is ideal.
5. Moisture: Once the seeds are sown, you need to keep them warm and moist at all times until they germinate. DO NOT water from above as this will flood the soil. We suggest placing the pot in a tray of water and letting the pot absorb the water from the bottom up.
6. Heat: If the soil dries out or the container gets cold, the seeds will not germinate at all. This is the most important step for successful germination! Ideally, seeds should be kept between 78-90F (25-32ยฐC). At higher temperatures, the seeds will germinate faster.
7. Patience: Patience is key when growing succulents from seed. They usually germinate after 3 weeks, but most often in 4-8 weeks. This can take longer in cold winter months.
8. Germination: Once the seeds have germinated, remove the plastic wrap. DO NOT move or transplant the seedlings. The seedlings have a very fragile root system and may die. Allow the plants to grow 0.5-1 cm before transplanting.
9. Sprayer: You can use the sprayer that comes in the kit to water small and fragile seedlings.
